Our Product Lines

Here at Fresh Water Filter Company we manufacture and distribute a wide range of water filtration and purification systems, from kieselguhr ceramic filters to Reverse-Osmosis systems. Each unit has it's own strengths and weaknesses, and it takes a certain amount of knowledge and experience to successfully recommend the "best" system for each individual installation.

You will find the knowledge here, in the form of technical notes and explanations on each of our major product lines, along with a complete listing of our catalogue, installation instructions and technical manuals for our products.

Ceramic Filters

The invention of the kieselguhr filter candle in 1890 proved to be one of the most effective, yet simple, means of removing pathogenic bacteria from drinking water. The candle is made of microporous ceramic, which blocks bacteria, cysts, sediment and any particulate metals, including rust, aluminium and lead, larger than 1 micron (1 millionth of a metre).

This is only the first stage of a ceramic filter, however. The ceramic is shaped as a container (the candle) which can be filled with a plethora of other filter media. Activated carbon, ion-exchange resins and others can all be used in a kieselguhr candle, allowing for a wide variety of applications for this efficient and versatile technology.

The products listed below are plumbed-in housings that work with kieselguhr candles. You can find a list of the various candle types in the Refills section.

Gravity Filters

The selection of products below all share one thing — they are units which take kieselguhr candles, but require no plumbing to operate. This makes them perfect in situations where portability is an issue.

The water is usually poured into a container, from which it forced through the filter candles by gravity, and ends up in a receptacle at the bottom of the filter.

Shower Filters

During the past years several scientific studies have suggested that untreated bath or shower water may actually be more dangerous than drinking water. The main reason for this danger is the chlorine routinely added to tap water by the water companies. This kills bacteria, but can cause symptoms like brittle hair, skin rashes and eye irritation in some people.

Our shower filters are designed to attach in-line to a "normal" shower with minimal plumbing. They utilise a patented filter medium called KDF-55, a high-purity alloy of zinc and copper, which effectively removes chlorine, as well as arsenic, mercury, hydrogen sulphide, and even organic matter like algae or bacteria.

Whole House

It is sometimes desirable to treat the water supply of an entire household. These Whole-House filter systems are designed to do just that. Using a highcapacity extruded carbon filter, these units can provide a high sustained flow rate.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse Osmosis is the method of purifying liquid by pushing it through a semi-permeable membrane. In the case of tap water, the membrane allows pure water molecules through, while the impurities are flushed away.

Water treated with Reverse Osmosis is considered chemically "pure". This means it is exceptionally good for people who are "de-toxing" — attempting to get rid of chemicals and pollutants from their bodies. If you are interested, you should see the Family Guide, which explains all about water and health issues.

If you use RO-treated water to make coffee, you can use 3% less coffee. The same applies to other concentrated drinks, like cordials

Softeners

As the bedrock of the British Isles contains a large proportion of limestone, water in this country tends to be very "hard", with a high proportion of calcium in suspension. This precipitates out of the water when heated, creating lime scale, and interacts with soap and other chemicals.

Our water softeners contain a resin that removes the magnesium and calcium deposits that cause water to be "hard" ( a process known as ion exchange). Periodically the resin needs flushing with salt water to regenerate it, which the softener does automatically. The salt does not enter the water supply, of course, but is simply flushed away by the softener.

Softened water has many benefits, making bathing a luxury as it is silky-feeling, and lathers much easier. It also causes less skin irritation, and hair washed with softened water looks and feels healthier. Finally, softened water does not leave marks when it dries, so it is excellent for washing crystal or glass.

Softened water removes limescale, the build-up of which can account for as much as 25% of central heating bills

Distillers

Water is recycled in nature by a system called the Hydrologic Cycle. Here water evaporates from the surface of oceans after being heated by the sun's rays, leaving impurities behind. This water vapour is cooled as it rises through the atmosphere, forming clouds. As the clouds become saturated the water droplets begin to precipitate out of the air, falling to the ground as rain, which flows through rivers back to the ocean.

Fresh Water Filter Distillers use almost an exact replica of the Hydrologic Cycle to separate water from the impurities dissolved in it. Because only water vapour is collected, distilled water is 99% pure H2O.

Coolers

Our water coolers and chillers provide an alternative to the traditional "bottled water" office cooler. They are plumbed into the mains water supply via unobtrusive micro-bore tubing, providing chilled water on demand. Some models have a replica water bottle, and others allow an optional water filter to be fitted, purifying the water before it is chilled.

Because these systems are plumbed in, the running costs are significantly lower than that of "bottled water" coolers. And because the water is "on-tap", you need not worry about stocking up on spare bottles for the cooler.

You can save up to £1320.00 each year by using a plumbed-in water cooler.

Custom Units

Here at Fresh Water Filter Co. we are sometimes asked by our customers to engineer a custom-made solution. We can design, manufacture, install and maintain a water treatment system tailored to the exact needs of that customer.

Refills

Several of our water treatment systems use consumable items which require regular replacement. These refills are shown below.
